PIZZA works - Good news for George Home
Pretty excited on a few fronts -
One — our good friends Joel + Audra Viehland's much anticipated Swyft has opened.
Two — they (+ we) were pretty pumped to see a NYT piece - all about Swyft, their sourdough "girl", Anne Bass' incredible attention to detail in restoring this historic building and a lot more.
Three — the food and drink is great.
Four — journalist Mimi Vu said this, describing Litchfield County —
...with its growing number of quietly chic shops (including Plain Goods, George Home and Privet House)
Quietly chic. Why thank you. No higher honor. George would be pleased.
Read it all here.
DUMAISMADE - Made by Dumais
Local (at least weekends for now) couple Kevin and Charlie Dumais have landed their beautiful pottery here at George. Here is something GEORGE would do: love it. Stop by to see - lighting, tableware and more. All interesting + cool.
LIGHT a FIRE
JUST arrived. Straight from London. And yes, we are the only USA way to shop them -
CERA candles. Simple perfection. We asked the founders, how do they talk about themselves? Fun to read what they say —
"We are chandlers making small batch, hand made, scented candles in East London. We began in 2015 testing with waxes, fragrances, wicks and containers. We now have 9 signature scents, available in 3 types of vessel with single and double wick options.
We have created candles that have a simple, structural look using a soft creamy wax that maximizes scent throw, even unlit. You shouldn’t have to light a candle to enjoy it.
We use all recyclable packaging."
We especially liked this —
"We can't change the world but we can make it smell a whole lot better."
Enough said. Let us know if you're in. Happy to ship.
THE HOUSES THAT THEY DREAMT OF —
— and actually created. Last Saturday afternoon at George with Reed & Delphine Krakoff to celebrate the publication of their book, Houses That We Dreamt Of — conversation, champagne + a signing.
The book is magic, full of the stories and designs of the Krakoff's own homes, expressed, as Arch Digest's Amy Astley puts it — with their "singular, fearless vision". Don't miss this book. The stuff of dreams. And also, design realities.
A DAY IN WASHINGTON, CT
Do this and do that..... if George had a free day in Washington, CT - here is what we would tell him to do:
After shopping at George Home —
Have lunch or afternoon tea across the street at The Pantry, a local favorite for their delicious food and fantastic desserts and sweets. Or walk over to Marty’s for a sandwich or salad--and in the summer a homemade ice cream. Norimaki offers world-class sushi from a Tokyo-trained chef, for lunch or dinner.
Also in Washington Depot is Valley Spirit Cooperative & Wellness Center which offers acupuncture, massage and meditation training, as well as an art salon and shop.
Where to stay? The Grace Mayflower. In the summer have lunch or dinner on their elegant terrace; when the weather changes, dine by the fire in the cozy Tap Room. On Friday and Saturday nights, join the locals for music from pianist David Grausman.
A bit further afield is New Preston where there’s more excellent shopping at J. Seitz, Pergola, Privet House and Plain Goods. Candy lover? Stop in at Sweeets or drop by for a glass of wine and charcuterie at The Owl. While you’re in New Preston, be sure to explore nearby Lake Waramaug, by car or bike, a beautiful local landmark.
We’re also very lucky to have two world class hair stylists helping to beautify the locals: Byrde + the b in Washington Depot, and Salvatore Anthony in New Preston.
In Litchfield you’ll find several remarkable dining options: Arethusa Al Tavolo and the Mockingbird, both located in the Bantam section and the West Street Grill, which is a local classic known for its great food and sophisticated country ambiance. Take a walk up West Street to tucked-away Cobble Court where you’ll find Blueprint CT, offering an eclectic selection of beautiful objects for the home.
We hope you will enjoy this place we call home. — WH & BG
